Abstract
It has been demonstrated that differential classification in terms of eight aptitude indexes increases the probability that airmen assigned to various technical schools will successfully complete the course of training in schools to which they are assigned. Furthermore, it has been shown that this differential classification produces a savings in manpower above that obtained through assignment solely in terms of general ability level. It is also a fact, however, that scores on the eight aptitude indexes are not unrelated. Therefore, in establishing minimum qualifying scores for assigning airmen to various Air Force technical schools, it is necessary to consider not only that level of aptitude required for maximum assurance of success in a given technical school, but also the personnel requirements of other technical schools. It is essential that minimum qualifying scores be established on a factual basis, taking into account (a) the aptitudes required for success in various schools, (b) the range of aptitudes in the manpower pool, (c) the interrelationships among these aptitudes of the men in the manpower pool, (d) the size of the manpower pool, (e) the assignment quotas in effect, and (f) the importance of the job to accomplishment of the Air Force mission. This technical report is concerned with a procedure for balancing these six considerations in establishing minimum qualifying scores so that optimum assignment of airmen to all technical schools can be achieved.
