Abstract
-
This report describes the development, construction and operation of a small research tunnel using helium as a working fluid. Mach numbers as high as 15 have been attained in a 3 1/4 inch diameter test section and Mach numbers of the order of 20 seem practical with further development. Some preliminary results at M = 12.7 are presented in the form of pressure distributions on a flat plate and Schlieren photographs. Some results on the effect of leading edge radius are also included. The experimental equipment is small, relatively simple and inexpensive, and seems to provide and excellent method for fluid dynamics studies at very high speeds.
