Abstract
-
The ultimate goal of the exploratory investigations described is the development of a rubber for special Air Force applications. Major requirements for such a material include good mechanical properties, high thermal stability (originally 300 F or higher), satisfactory performance at -65 F or lower, and resistance to aromatic fuels, synthetic ester-base oils, and hydraulic fluids. To this end, fluorine-containing condensation polymers are being investigated in an effort to discover and develop suitable new elastomers. This report describes the preparation, compounding, crosslinking, and properties of certain fluorine-containing polyester elastomers which appear to meet the goals outlined above. The report also describes the research performed on the synthesis of fluorine containing difunctional starting materials, polyesters and nitrogen-substituted polyamides therefrom, and their characterization.
