Abstract
-
The Fluids, Lubricants, and Elastomers Branch of the Materials Laboratory, AFWAL, established the requirements for a MIL-L-7808H operational oil with corrosion inhibition characteristics at least equal to those of MIL-C-8188C. The new oil formulation is to provide corrosion inhibition under long-term storage conditions of the ALCM F107 turbine engine. During the initial fifteen-month effort, several approaches were evaluated as candidate methods for determining the effectiveness of corrosion inhibiting oil additives. A screening procedure was developed after preliminary modifications were made to the Corrosion Rate Evaluation Procedure (CREP). Using the CREP together with compatibility and miscibility screening of oil/inhibitor blends, a total of 67 candidate corrosion inhibitors (CCI) were evaluated. These included CCI obtained from Bray Oil Company, El Monte, California, as part of a subcontract to synthesize candidate corrosion inhibitors. Additional tests were completed on a preliminary physical and chemical property evaluation of the oil/inhibitor blends in regard to MIL-L-7808H and MIL-C-8188C specifications.
