Abstract
In anticipation of corrosion problems during long term storage of F-107 gas turbine engines in air-launched cruise missiles, a program was undertaken to develop a corrosion inhibiting engine oil with performance characteristics at least equal to those specified by MIL-L-7808H. Program objectives included development and validation of an accelerated corrosion test procedure, evaluation of representative samples of various chemical classes of potential corrosion inhibiting compounds, and complete characterization of the most promising formulation. An accelerated Corrosion Rate Evaluation Procedure was developed and validated through correlation with the humidity cabinet corrosion test described in the MIL-C-8188C specification. A total of 102 potential corrosion inhibitors were evaluated in single additive and two-additive combinations in qualified MIL-L-7808H lubricants. Several very promising formulations were developed and evaluated, leading to the development of a formulation which provides corrosion protection superior to that of MIL-C-8188C and conforms to all MIL-L-7808H requirements specified in the Statement of Work, except that of total acid number.
