Abstract: The Truck Design Optimization Project (TDOP) Phase II is being conducted to establish the performance and cost-effectiveness of premium freight car trucks with reference to the standard three-piece truck. This report sets up a framework for quantitative characterization of truck performance and outlines a method for collecting economic data. Means of achieving these objectives by road-testing, mathematical modeling, and review of maintenance and operational data are described. An important goal of the project is to supply the railroad industry with a basis for performance specifications for freight car trucks.
