Abstract
This paper documents the analysis and application of the five-layer beam damping system which consists of: undamped beam (layer 1 ), adhesive layer (layer 2), stand-off spacing (layer 3), viscoelastic damping material (layer 4), and constraining layer (layer 5). It includes the derivation of equations and development of the general-purpose computer program to compute and provide graphical plots of modal loss factor, modal frequency, RMS response and peak resonance, each as a function of temperature. Parametric results are presented for variation in thickness of each layer (except the undamped beam layer). This technology can be used by designers as a means of estimating damping in beam-like structures with viscoelastic constrained-layer damping.
